Wool’s Carpet Advantages

Did you Know ?

That the average bedroom carpet contains the wool from six or seven sheep?

That there are more sheep in New Zealand than people? In fact, there are 13 sheep for every person.

Wool’s Advantages IMG_1942

RESILIENCE: wool carpet and rugs resist crushing well and are also abrasion resistant. Well cared for wool carpet and rugs last for years. (Natural Crimp)

DYES WELL: The luxurious colors of “true” wool oriental rugs stand out in contrast to synthetic imitations

HIDES SOIL: The scales on the wool’s epidermis hide soil, and also release it readily to proper vacuuming

NATURALLY FLAME RESISTANT: wool fibers rarely support flame when the source of ignition is removed, therefore wool is sometimes chosen for commercial applications

Wool’s Disadvantages

EXIMG_1941PENSIVE: wall to wall wool carpeting is out of most consumer’s price range, and represents about 1% of the carpet sold today. Most U.S. cleaners are more likely to encounter wool in oriental rugs than is wall to wall use.

CHEMICAL DAMAGE: wool must be cleaned with products in a pH range of 4.5 - 8.5

Long term exposure to pH's over 9.5, or even short term exposure over 11.5, will damage the wool’s epidermis, thus shortening the item’s useful life. Chlorine bleach will completely dissolve wool fibers in minutes!

STAINS EASILY: wool’s ability to accept dye means that it is easily stained by spills containing dyes, such as beverages

DRIES SLOWLY: wool’s absorbency makes it easy for a careless cleaner, or a cleaner with malfunctioning equipment, to over wet wool carpeting

Since wool carpet being cleaned may be quite old, browning from jute backing is possible (as well as shrinkage in the case of woven goods)
